You wouldn’t always think that beer and comedy go hand in hand, unless you like Al the Landlord, of course. But Foster’s have combined the two in its latest series of ads featuring two fictional agony uncles in the form of Brad and Dan.

Brad and Dan spend most of their time relaxing and kicking back in the shade of their Foster’s beach shack on a sizzling hot Aussie beach. They’re the stars of the Brad and Dan good call ads that have been running for about a year now.

In each of the ads, while the boys enjoy a can of their favourite premium lager, they answer a call on the Foster’s helpline – which rings out in the shack. For the majority of the ads, the person at the other end of the line was a British bloke with a dilemma. Things that concern young men the world over – should they shave their hairy backs, will their girlfriend end up looking like her mother, is it wise to get a tattoo of your girlfriend’s name?

To all these questions and more, Brad and Dan invariably came up with a quick and common sense response, laced with the usual macho stereotypes Australian males are known for.

However, in the most recent good call ad, the boys are shocked to hear a girl on the end of the line – Lucy from Manchester to be precise. And she starts to complain about her boyfriend not listening to her. As she rants on the other end of the line, Brad and Dan do exactly what you’d imagine – anything but listen to her. When she eventually pauses for breath, and asks them: “What do you think?” they’re not even in the shack anymore and come dashing back in to answer her.

Brad covers up well, saying: “We’re not here to give you a solution, Lucy, we’re just here to listen…” That’s music to Lucy’s ears, and she says: “Why can’t he be more like you guys?”

Brad sets her mind at rest: “If you look deep enough, I’m sure you’ll find he’s just like us.” As the call ends, we see Lucy’s boyfriend sitting next to her, transfixed by a computer game and completely oblivious to her conversation.
